Many people will probably find a more practical reason of the iPod instead of using it a music device. People will be able to use more of their iPod then they could think of. When the ideas of using iPods being integrated with our live, I think many people will able to find it necessary for them to function in society. One example is one college is using iPods to record lectures and distribute them if a student misses a lecture.

The economy of music will change due to many people either downloading illegal or legal songs. The use of open source networks will help many people share their music with their friends or relative. This will increase more people downloading illegally and many will not want to buy music from a website if they can get it free in other means. The incentives to buy music will go down if songs are downloaded illegally.

The use of iPods in education will help other people understand the need for this technology. People can be connected by their networks and share information like lectures. With pod casting, many people can upload lectures or conversation and let other people listen and voice their opinions after listening to the conversation.

The site name is Plugging in to music doesn’t mean switching off the world. The publisher is New Media Age. The article talks about how iPods is helping with people connect with one another. iPods can help with people talk about how they “organize [their] music collections, share new tracks with news friends and create playlists for parties.” It also talks about pod casting how it creates a new phenomenon with society.

It has credible source because it was published recently. The information that written was excellent. It helps with my final project and made me understand more about the iPod and how we can be connected with another. The information is talking about how iPods is connecting and making networks as well.

Plugging in to music doesn't mean switching off the world. (2005, March). New Media Age,14. Retrieved June 2, 20055, from ABI/INFORM Global database.

The document name is iPod Sprouts Successful Changes in Media Landscape. The author is Wallys Conhaim. The article talks about how the iPod is becoming more popular as the technology is increasing. The article talks about how iPod has many choices and characteristics. The author talks briefly about how iPod is becoming a device for audio books.

It is credible because it can help me with my paper in how these various characteristics can help iPods become a better device. It also helps me with how the iPod can now deliver audio books. These audio books can help authors sell or spread their books much further then they can hope for. The information was recent as well.

Wallys W Conhaim. (2005, March). iPod Sprouts Successful Changes in Media Landscape. Information Today, 22(3), 25-26. The author is Michael Stpehens. The article elaborates about how students on campuses can listen to lectures notes when there isn’t a computer accessible towards them. It also talks about how the devices can help with students who first language is not English.

It is current information because this article was written recent. It can help with my paper in showing as an example of how the iPod is changing life on a campus. It is credible because the information is from reputable database that I have heard and used before. And some campuses have already begun using the iPods as device for lectures.

Michael Stephens. (2005, April 15). I am curious how these people come up with codes and applications that challenge big companies like Microsoft. I think without knowing open source networks, I think people will presume there is only one kind of server we are used and nothing else. I am also curious where open source networks can lead society in the future.

An important topic I learned was there is so much technology that is hard to understand where it came from and why there is a need to change it. When electronic voting started to happen, there was so much errors that as society we forget there can be flaws and we forgot to test them out. I think once we test out products and slow things down, I think technology will be well suited for our daily live.

voip extra credit

The impact will be there will be a single network to talk with others instead of many networks. The Bush's website was not accessible to many of his supporters who don't have good technology. Also Bush's website is based on Microsoft server and Kerry's website is based on Apache a open source software. In the first article it talks about rules and regulations that a website has to have on it. It also talks about the American with Disabilities Act which explains what a website has to have. If the website don't follow these rules, then we won't have a public space that accommodates everybody who access the web.
Another relationship is to make website accessible to people who don't have the right technology in their city. I want to know the affects of downloading and having an ipod. I am changing it to just knowing the pro and cons of an ipod or what other media players’s characteristics that ipod doesn’t have.
Search inquires:
Google – ipod versus iriver – 23,700 hits
LexisNexis – ipod versus iriver – 125 hits
Expanded Academic Index – ipod – 566 hits
Pew Internet – ipod versus – 30 hits
Alt-Press Watch – ipod – 268 hits
ABI Inform Global – ipod – 632 hits

The document name is Attack of the Anti-iPod: WITH FLASH AND FANCY FEATURES, NEW DIGITAL-MUSIC PLAYERS ARE TRYING TO PARE APPLE. The author is Time Morrison. The key arguments is how different media players have different characteristics that ipod doesn’t. It talks about what hardware an iriver has and what ipod is lacking. I think this credible because I have heard the magazine before, if I haven’t heard the Time before I would skeptical of the stories they produced. This is current because the ipod is new to many people and the Expanded Academic Index is reliable.
This article is helpful for me to my topic because this author is talking about other media players and their characteristics. It can relate to what I am researching on. This article I can agree with what the author is writing because I experimented with my friend’s ipod and after awhile I thought other media players will be suitable for me then an ipod.

Morrison, Time. (2005, April 11). Attack of the Anti-iPods: WITH FLASH AND FANCY FEATURES, NEW DIGITAL-MUSIC PLAYERS ARE TRYING TO PARE APPLE. Time, p. A22. Retrieved May 14, 2005, from Expanded Academic Index.

The document name is The iriver H10 does it all: It's an audio player, recorder, FM radio, and photo viewer in a slim case, with 5GB of storage. The author is Bill Machrone. The information that is seen in this article is the characteristics of a media player called the iriver H10. This devices has many pros and cons and makes the ipod seem favorable to many who are still deciding on a media player that suites them. This information sounds reasonable because of the Lexis-Nexis database. The magazine is one of many computer magazines I heard before. This is reliable because the writing looks good and that the information sounds a good way to talk how great the ipod is.
This information is good for my project because I can boost up the reputation ipod is having. Even though there are many media players out there, ipod is one that seems simple and easy to operate. This article talks about how the iriver is and how the ipod is. This article can help me think about buying a media player and hopefully share it with the class.

Machrone, Bill. (2005, March 9). The iriver H10 does it all: It's an audio player, recorder, FM radio, and photo viewer in a slim case, with 5GB of storage. PC Magazine.com. Retrieved May 14, 2005, from Lexis-Nexis.

The document name is The iPod Experiments. The author is Michael Stephens. The information that this article is providing is the how ipod is helping out with students at colleges. Ipod is helping students listen to lectures at their pace of speed. While checking the Ulrich’s website, I saw two entries with Library Journal and one of them has a referee shirt which means it is a credible source. It is current by when the article was published last April. This is useful information because it shows the ipod is a great tool for learning.
This is a great article to help me with my project. This is a great piece that shows how an ipod can help students in college while being a media player. This can help me show a pro about the ipod characteristics and how it is a benefit for many students who want to gain more from their lectures by listening through their ipod.

Stephens, Michael. If people started to share their ipods, I wonder would that be considered to be public space or not? To see how technology can help spread certain information to one another. Relating the ipod with social networks, does an ipod create a social group with peers or strangers? If social networks are created with others, then I would look at how they are connected with one another.
I can also look at how the ipod is can sometimes be open source software. With many software that can help the ipod with improvements and become better, then can this devices become an open source media that people can help one another? Also to look at what the impact ipod had on society as a whole, is it good or bad? There are many theories I can relate it too but need to focus on what topic is best suited for my topic.

To complete my project, I will try to research more about ipod’s pros and cons. I hopefully can figure what to put on my website and know that it run smoothly. I will try to figure out what kind of information will be good enough to be shown on my website and what to present to the class. To complete my project, I will spend enough hours so that my website will be running and without errors. To focus more about the topic and where I want to focus on, if it is pros and cons or something else. It is also hard to say how I would complete this project.

Internet technology

Technology has a great impact on voting, like telling the demographic of a certain city or county and see how they would vote in an election. It can spread a person name without having a lot of money. The technology that impacts an election, I think is the internet, it can spread news, pros and cons of candidates and know what other people think about them. When people spread their news or write on their blogs about the candidates, other people are affected in how they would vote. Technology can also bring news to candidates faster then before. When the candidate need to prepare a speech, they can e-mail it to someone and can recieve it back within a couple of hours. Technology can really do something good for the candidate. Without technology, I think the way we see and hear candidates would be changed if information about them were slow to arrive towards us.

public space

Public space means to me is a place where you can have a say about anything that is on your mind. The second reading was talking about a Japanese network. The open source movement is similar to these readings because open source movement meant to be connected with one another. The movement lets other people who are more knowledgeable to help one another as well. The articles also talks about how people are connected with one another through the networks and other technological tools. The sense of community also plays a role with the articles and the open source movement.

Communities

Blogging facilitate community by having it more diverse with what people have to say. There are rules for people to fellow and some people don't like to follow rules. It helps us talk and get to know our neighbors that are far away. Wifi can help connect villages together and become a bigger community. The use of wifi in villages makes them connect to major cities cheaper and be connected to other schools and medical feilds. I think wifi is a great tool for people to be connected with others that live far or near to them. As villages become more connected they can trade with one another and help each other in time of need.

The project I selected is going to research the phenomenon of Ipods and Mp3s players. I want to research it because all my friends have Ipods or some kind of Mp3s device. With Mp3s players, I wonder how music online is being shared and does it create a problem with music industry. It’s important because it creates new ways for many people to be connected with one another. Many people can lend each other their Ipods or Mp3 device, to help spread their sense of music. To start with my research, I went to UW libraries homepage and went to the communication subject where there was link for our class. I went to the main sources of finding articles and found many things that were related to my subject. When I went to the internet sites, I typed in key words that would help me with information I was trying to look for. One strategy was trying to find the right words to limit my results. When I limited the search with key words, it help me find good source.
Search Queries:
Google – Ipod and software – with 27,000,000 results
Alt-Press Watch – Ipod and software – 13 results
Expanded Academic Index – Ipod and software – 36 results
LexisNexis – Ipod and software – 125 results
Washington Sate Newsstand – Ipod and software – 60 results
Ethnic NewsWatch – Ipod and software – 4 results
Expanded Academic Index – Mp3 players – 395 results
LexisNexis – iriver – 110 results
Alt-Press Watch – Mp3 players – 109 results
LexisNexis – peer to peer software – 125 results
While using the Washington State Newsstand database and typing Ipod and software, I found an article called “New players give iPod worthy of competition.” The author is Linda Knapp. The key arguments are the pros and cons of two Mp3s device, and how the author likes one. I know that this site provides good information because of the database I used and it is restricted to people who go to the University of Washington.
It will be good for my paper by having a person who tried to devices and explains the differences between them. Without knowing the experience of an mp3 device, I could rely more on this author who has first hand knowledge of the products. This can help show differences in the products.
Linda Knapp. (2005, February 5). New players give iPod worthy competition; Getting Started :[Fourth Edition]. Seattle Times,p. E6

The Communication Abstract database was good and using the key word mp3, there was many articles. I found one called “The availability of the fair use defense in music piracy and Internet technology” written by Das, S. The author points out how Mp3 files are causing a threat to the music industry and wondering if they could profit from Mp3 files. It has useful information because it said that it is from Federal Communication Law Journal.
It would help me with how the use of Mp3 files is decreasing the sales of compact discs and the increase of this media. As Mp3 files are increasing, it will be interesting to read how the music industry in coping with digital music. Without knowing how the music in being affected, then my paper won’t be as good. This would be good to have another point of view.
Das, S. (2000). The availability of the fair use defense in music piracy and internet technology. Federal Communications Law Journal, 52(3), 727-748. Retrieved April 25, 2005, from Communication Abstracts database.

Using the Ethnic NewsWatch and typing Ipod and software, I found an article title “They’ve got the beats” written by Tariq Muhammad. The arguments are how compact disc walkman is compared to Mp3 devices. I know that it is use because it is from a magazine that I heard before and it is from a database.
I could use this information to have another point of view in how it affected society and the impact of it. With this information, it could show me how a different people react to these devices. It could help me with how the rise of Mp3 devices in decreasing the sales of CD players.
Tariq K Muhammad. (2003, September). They've got the beats. Review of medium_being_reviewed title_of_work_reviewed_in_italics. Black Enterprise, 34(2), 54-56.

The database I used is Alt-Press Watch and typing Ipod and software there many articles. One article that was useful was an article written by Kristen Ferguson and her article is called “Learning to Share; With major labels on board, a Saratoga Springs prepares to unveil its pioneering online file-sharing service.” The arguments that are brought up is how a company is launching a new file-sharing service to help people who carry Mp3 devices. It is useful because it is from a reliable database and it is restricted to only University of Washington students.
It could help me with how Mp3 devices are helping other people and company to launch new services to get music. It can help me with how file-sharing programs is a popular business that help people look for a better way to download music without the hassle of paying for the music. It also shows how many people are finding a way not to buy music legally.
Ferguson, Kirsten. (2005, January 20). Learning to Share; With major labels on board, a Saratoga Springs company prepares to unveil its pioneering online file-sharing service. Metroland,p. 22.
ABI Inform Global had many articles when I typed in Ipod and software. An article written by Walter Mossberg was interesting. His article is called “'Napster To Go' Offers Alternative to iTunes -- If You Keep On Paying.” The arguments are about monthly services, if this is better then paying one song at a time. I think this is a reliable source because it is from the Wall Street Journal and I heard of this paper before. This could help me with the paper in how finding and downloading music is helping the music industry crack down on illegal download of songs. It can show me how this decrease or increase the downloading of illegal songs. And if this can help prevent the use of peer to peer networks to get illegal songs.Walter S. Mossberg. (2005, March 17). 'Napster To Go' Offers Alternative to iTunes -- If You Keep On Paying. Wall Street Journal (Eastern Edition), p. B.1. The way to find more information about my topic is to use more databases to find articles that can help relate with what I am writing about. With the use of Google or a search engine I can find people beliefs about Ipods and if they like or not. Another way that I can find more information to find tune my way of searching articles. Instead of typing broad, I would focus on key terms that are related to the topic I am searching. If I don’t focus on key terms, I would have broad articles that probably don’t relate to topics I am researching for. To narrow the search, I would figure out what things I should focus on this topic. Instead of looking for everything that relates to this topic, I should look for just three areas that could strength my project. With certain key words, I can find better articles that help me with the project. Not knowing the key words or where my focus is, I have a lot articles that doesn’t relate to what I am doing.I would ask for help if I am stuck on something that I can’t do myself. If I don’t know what I am doing I would ask questions and help with the librarians or teacher. I would also ask friends if my project makes sense or not. Also I would find out what many people are interesting in hearing instead of the broad terms of Mp3s devices. I think through my research I am interested in how music industry is affected with programs that either people can download legally or illegally. While researching, people need to know the pros and cons of Mp3s devices and knowing how people are reacting to these devices.

Open source

I think scholars should study open source software movement because it is a way a person could distribute free software to society. I haven't experienced the electronic voting but I would be confused if I were a old person looking forward to vote. The America electronic voting can be subjected too hackers, if they get into the voting network system.
As voting becomes more complicated with different designs, instructions and choice of font and size many people will become less interested in voting. I think the US should try the Bombay way of voting. If we adopted the changes to become more simplified then people will probably be interested in voting. Then the design of the ballot is difficult to accommodate for a vary of people. While reading, I agree with Whitney Quesenbery in we should have voice out our opinion instead of being silent. Just to know that when we are near a computer, we want to know the lastest scores of sports or who sent you an e-mail. I think it is good but always bad because if we center our lives to accurate times and dates then we would get frustrated at friends and families who don't send us an e-mail or something at a particular time.
I never thought analog would be better then digital for future machines. Just to know that digital can some unexpected errors scares me because digital is becoming popular with society. Like digital cable and internet, if there was a slight error on these media server, I think some be furious and frustrated. If people can fix the digital errors, I think it be good for society.

April 11 readings

The Role of the Internet in National and Local News Media Use:
While reading this article, I didn't know that the New York Times and Washington Post had around the clock coverage of political issues on the internet. This seems like it is brand new for many people who live in rural cities, who don't have access to the internet. It shows how new media like the internet can play a role in our daily lives in giving out daily national news that our local news couldn't give us. I found that people who live in rural cities have to rely on their own local and other local news organiazation to get political information. People who don't own a computer rank print media high and the internet low. I would have thought many rural cities would have access to national news publications.

Beginner's guide to Media Reform:
While reading the article I learned that after the year of "1975, two-thirds of independent newspaper owners and one-third of independent television owners have disappeared." Another great fact is how important stories that media don't make their way into the newpapers or radio. It seems people who own a siginificant amount of media can control what we hear and see on the media outlets. If information is damaging to their company, they will probably won't show it on their outlets and try to give as little amount of information to the public.

more "ah's-has"

Mark Nelson reading:

Information overload definition was something caught my eye. Knowing the information and how we can’t handle so much information. When I think about information overload I think about the search engine Google. As we search something particular, we get a lot of information but we only want to get what we want. Another interesting fact about this reading was how much volume of information there is on the internet. The example of the reader was shocking because reading all that information will push you back in your own reading. I think after reading the volume of words, there would be more new words to read. The last fact from this article I thought was interesting was the Gopher system and you can find certain information on it.

Christopher N. Carlson reading:

The article was fascinating with all the facts the author gives. There were a couple of examples that stood out for me. One was how Arizona lawyers mass e-mailed everyone, and this was a record. The other was how different search engines have different retrieval strategies. These examples help me see that the internet is still quite new and people are programming websites and search engines that tailors to people’s preferences. While reading the article, I didn’t know there was something called a Deep Web where it is connected to servers.

3rd assignment

In the Marshall Mcluhan piece, I was interested in how businesses today are finding out what kind of medium they are engaged in. Reading the article, I wonder what kinds of new mediums companies have for us, for example what does Apple think they are doing with the Ipod? It is interesting to know that companies are helping to introduce new mediums to society.
By the end of the article, my attention came to the point of stables that can be instable “in the economy but great endurance in the population.” As society is getting used to new technologies, we think it would make us abandon old ways of communicating with one another but it doesn’t. I think that with technology it can help us communicate more with people who live a far and helps us understand one another.

Learning in class about the history of computers, I knew that computers was and still an important invention for society but in Principles of New Media, I didn’t know computers were use to write poetry and friction in the 1970s as well. With the World Wide Web being popular with many young generations, it never came to my thoughts how a simple webpage has many steps to appear on your monitor. It similar to reading in the IP/TCP, but knowing that each pixel, frame and media elements are stored somewhere else. Knowing that it takes a lot of time to see a webpage if weren’t for key technologies.

Extra Credit:
How can new technology and makers of the new technology convince society that their product will help them? For example, when mp3s players first came out, were people more inclined to download free music or pay for it? While reading Networks of Remediation, it is true how technologies economic success comes from society accepting the new media into their daily life like the Apple Ipod. As new technologies emerge, they will always be hysteria, the social dimension was interesting, and I didn’t know it could have two meanings immediacy and hypermediacy.

extra credit

While noticing the date of the article, the author is predicting the technology we might see in the future. In the beginning of his article, he writes about an automobile if it were created in Egyptian time and how all the money the Pharaoh had would not make a trip to Giza. Reading about the diazo dye that can help develop pictures once the camera is operated was the article made think about the Polaroid cameras and how it was a great technology for people to take photographs. With so many predictions of technologies, I think most of them were created and embraced by society. It is interesting how the author describes certain technology and how he predicts future technologies, I wonder what we would write about if he saw the technologies we are using today?

2nd ah ha's

The “ah-ha’s” I found were while sending e-mails to friends in a different country, it takes a lot of routers and connections to get to the e-mail server. I didn’t know that you could do something like to help send information to another computer. After reading this article, I realized it takes a lot of time to send an e-mail but we don’t know because are used to getting information fast.
The ideation moves it from scientific to technological performance. It was interesting to read how come certain ideas came before the real invention of the technology those we see today. Reading about how come prototypes can be labeled as invention while others are still labeled as prototypes. Also it was interesting to read about the different levels of technologies faced from the thinking about it to society adjusting to the new technologies being produced.

Ah-ha's

The two “ah-ha’s” I notice was the many theories and applications applied to cable television, electronic mail and telephone services. The theory of use and gratification for the cable television was interesting, one interesting fact that people still watch their local news more then the cable news. The electronic mail and how it can affect a community way of speaking to one another. When I read about the telephone services, I didn’t know that there were sub-categories for citizens. And these sub-categories had different levels of how they would respond to phone advertisements.
The second “ah-ha’s” was the rise of the transportation became faster; the need for information became to rise. During the early nineteenth century, there many inventions that helped spread the information faster. But an interesting face was the rise of the radio broadcast came from people using the ham radio. The first radio station was in Pittsburgh. When it was a success, news outlet tried to use the radio to help spread the information but wasn’t successful. The news broadcast over radio became successful gradually.
The radio was popular until the invention of the television. The concept of images, sound coming together was thought of in the nineteenth century but wasn’t popular until the 1930s. Several years after the invention of the television, computers were becoming popular for the use of business purposes. As computers began to raise, the internet as became in great use. Even though there have been many inventions to speed the process of information, society adoptions of these inventions will be slow and gradually.
